In Sandy's aftermath some refineries wait for electricity

GasBuddy Blog -- Sandy's aftermath is still being felt and its economic impact is still being tallied. Some entire towns remain under water but one thing remains certain; gasoline prices in some parts of the northeast will be going up.

It's not 'price gouging'. Don't blame the retailers. Don't blame politicians. Don't blame Wall Street hedge funds. Don't blame OPEC.

It's all boils down to supply and demand and in the northeast, gasoline supply, unfortunately, has tightened. East Coast refineries had been running at 81.8 percent of capacity (well below the national rate: 87.2 percent) in the week before Sandy reached New Jersey and just before its arrival, refineries in NJ, DE, MD and PA wisely shut down for safety precautions. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

What this country needs is one grade of fuel that all 50 states can agree on, not the "boutique fuel" setup we currently have. Why can't everyone have the same high quality fuel that California requires? Would it really be much more expensive if every refinery could make it and every state could buy it?

We have plenty of crude supply. What isn't working right now in the northeast are the refineries that make gas, diesel, fuel oil, etc out of that crude.

It makes no sense at all that these refineries don't have at least part of their campuses on backup power. It is apparent that they are huge power users, so having the whole refinery on back up power may not be feasible; but I am sure that a couple of super-sized diesel generators could enable the refinery to operate at least partially to make, let's say - gasoline? Or maybe they are just looking for an excuse to raise prices?

I’ll guess a little of both depending on what individual stations decide to do.
