Shorter days increase pedestrian safety risks

GasBuddy Blog -- Autumn weather brings different challenges to all parts of the country... In North Carolina, the DOT is asking motorists to be extra attentive because October is the deadliest month of the year for pedestrians there.

As the fall season brings cooler weather that means shorter days too– and a higher risk of accidents between pedestrians and vehicles than at any other time of year. In the month of October alone, an average of 240 people are struck by cars across the state annually.

That's why North Carolina is launching its 'Watch for Me' campaign to protect pedestrians: Watch for Me, NC!

The campaign offers important reminders for all of us. Motorists are asked to watch for people crossing the street near bus...

Many points stated are good, but the pedestrian can do more by simply paying attention where one walks, look for cars who are about to move because drivers have blind spots when backing up. Don't run, walk cautiously. Be aware of your surroundings -- drivers are in a hurry and they are faster than you so be alert, STOP TEXTING and playing with your cellphone. This in itself can get you injured if not killed.

There have been 6 pedestrian deaths in my area this year alone. How about this? Tell these people to stop wearing black at night and stop walking in the middle of the roads!

It is usually the pedestrian who walks/runs/bikes out in front of the car. With shorter days that means drivers will spend more time driving with lights on, the pedestrian can see a car coming much better than the car can see the pedestrian. Both parties have responsibilities, there are driver laws and pedestrian laws but ultimately the pedestrian is the one who comes out on the losing end of it and therefore they are the ones who need to keep themselves out of the way of any cars that are near them.

Just saw someone this morning walking along the side of the road in a dark hoody and jeans. Real hard to see in the dark until you're right on top of him. Stupid!

guess the shorter daytime light period is responsible... when November arrives it's colder and less people walk.
