So far Alaska's other pipeline has not had any problems. Good track record. And the money would be good.

DEG - did you read the article? The US market is practically awash in cheap natural gas right now. Alaska gas would never be worth the immense cost of a pipeline to ship to the lower 48 - so it's effectively stranded. On the other hand, a shorter pipeline to get the North Slope gas across the state, there to be liquified and tankered to Asia, where prices are much better, could be profitable. Otherwise, that gas will stay right where it has for decades, too isolated from profitable markets to be worth extracting.

It might make it easier to ship to Asia then to pipeline it down to the lower 48 states.

“What happens when a natural gas pipeline bursts?”
It’s pretty dramatic. Years ago when I lived in town, a NG distribution line under the street in front of my house ruptured during construction work. I think it was about a 4-inch pipe. It screamed like a banshee, shooting a visible geyser of gas 50 or 60 feet in the air. Fortunately it was shut off before it ignited. I cannot imagine what would have happened if that torch got lit; a holocaust for anything nearby, like my house.

Make them build it, and tax the f@&k out of it. Let them pass that cost on too.

The US should be working on making itself energy independent instead of enriching the Chinese market.

The companies should sell Asia and Australia the natural gas that they have in Alaska. U.S. retailers will be unwilling to create the infrastructure for distribution to the final consumers in most places domestically.

Why not let it happen? This country would get back into the export business in a big way - especially to China where this would help to even the scales currently favoring China in a big way.
