Final seal on BP oil well delayed for additional work

Los Angeles Times -- The ultimate sealing of BP's gulf oil well may not get underway until late this month or early October because experts want more time to analyze the well, fish out a broken pipe and possibly apply another cement seal on the top for "more insurance" against unlikely troubles, a top federal official said.

National spill-response chief Thad Allen, in a conference call with reporters Wednesday, reiterated his promise that there was "no threat" of oil leaks from the well now that a stronger blowout preventer had been placed on top of it.

The new equipment gives experts the luxury of taking a few extra steps to ensure that they will not encounter problems with the final "bottom kill." During this procedure, the original well's outer ring, or annulus, will be intersected underground with a

did you read their latest report that was published today?
apparently, the spill was NOT really their fault, but that they were the failures of others: missed inspections (US govt.), non-compliant/defective parts (global dynamics and ravenwood), human errors on the part of their employees, haste for profits by the stockholders of BP!!
BUT surprisingly, they (the CEOs and top staff) are NOT responsible (see today's tampa tribune) - did you expect something else - I DON'T THINK SO!!

There's no urgency; take the time, do it very, very well -- and drive a wooden stake through the beast's heart to be sure.

As to the all-knowing wizards who think BP's team currently working to rectify the Macondo well/Deepwater Horizon mess are uneducated, untrained, inexperienced, or careless, well, George Burns said it well; "Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair."

As for me, “I am not young enough to know everything.” - Oscar Wilde

BP needs to shut up, seal the well and then still be quiet. All talk and finger pointing gets absolutely nothing done at all. This well should have been sealed long before it was.

I almost agree with aldog365, except that I wouldn't let BP be in charge of drilling, until they pay their fines and fund the relief fund. Or any well under our jurisdiction, for that matter.

If you don't hold these corporations responsible, they will continue to take short cuts and the cheapest route.

Sounds like belt and suspender approach the issue. What a waste to leave that much oil untapped.

BP still hasn't given up on that reservoir of oil below. They plan on coming back to it and drilling & pumping it dry some day, as it is already discovered. They may be faced with new regulations and higher cost with out cheap short cuts. I agree and think its a good thing to make sure that hole is plugged good and tight.
