if the refinery would be well maintained after being built, that would make it worth it, but sadly, the motto "build it, use it, don't worry about anything else" seems to apply to most refineries.

Don't be so sure about the Midwest being huge farmland anymore, @jcurley. That drought hasn't gone away yet. Farmers are having a real bad time trying to bring what few crops they grew this season to market.
Expect the price of meat to go up. Feed prices have gone through the roof.

Sure, @30mpg80, the Sierra Club's the problem. Big Oil's hands are as clean as Ivory Snow, huh? The Sierra Club wouldn't be around if Big Oil hadn't screwed up the air, land, and water in the first place. Tell them to clean up their act and the Sierra Club won't have any members.

Just understand that oil independence does not mean cheap gas, @zantor. Tar sands are expensive. Shale oil is expensive. Deepwater drilling is expensive. Those are the options in front of us.
We already sucked the cheap oil out of the ground 40 years ago.

Amazing. Record amounts of shale oil being produced in the Dakotas and they want to build a refinery that will process Canadian Tar Sand crude??? How does this make sense?
Build a refinery that can handle the shale oil, not that Canadian crap.
