Contra Costa Times -- Problems at California refineries have slashed supplies across the state, cutting fuel production and raising wholesale prices -- the price stations pay for their gasoline -- by as much as 73 cents, to levels not seen since 2007.

The oil companies are not charitable organizations. On the other hand, given my experience with church-sponsored hospitals, they can invoice with the best.

If this keeps up, GasBuddy will have to change its slogan - "Find Cheap Gas Prices In California" - to "Find Barely-Acceptable Gas Prices That Only Gouge You Somewhat." Like Irwin says in the Sit n' Sleep ads - "You're Killing Me!"

30mpg80 surmises:

"Sounds like time to truck in supplies from nearby states, and declare an emergency temporary exemption on gasoline volatiles."

Well, yes, that SOUNDS sensible. HOWEVER, California has its own pollution and environmental regulations, including its OWN gasoline formula. Only California refineries are licensed to produce gasoline for California; it can't be imported.

Isn't that a nice cushy arrangement for the regulators?

Busymomma56 whines:

"The refineries mess up and the people pay. When do they take some responsibility for their mess ups?"

Refiners don't make any money either when the refinery isn't running. Ever heard of "supply and demand"? This is the "supply" part affecting the price.

The station operators do not make a lot of money but if they have no product they will not make anything , regardless of the cost to them.
