" turbines could go up over a three-year period within an area covering 350 square miles of the hilly sagebrush country south of Rawlins in south-central Wyoming."
So much for this pristine land that belongs to the public.
"These are going to be landmarks in America. They are going to be what people think about when they think about the American West. And they are going to completely change the way that we think about energy production," said Neil Kornze, acting deputy director of the BLM."
I'd say more like skid marks than 'landmarks'!
"Salazar's signature means the BLM now can begin site-specific environmental analysis to help plot specific layout of the project's turbines, roads and power lines."
Ugly, ugly and what about those endangered insects, lizards, snakes and gophers??? MIRACULOUSLY none exist there....LOL!
"The Chokecherry/Sierra Madre wind project is owned by the Power Company of Wyoming LLC, a wholly owned affiliate of Denver billionaire Phil Anschutz's The Anschutz Corp."
Gotta pay off those 1%!!!

Alaydown: I read the L.A. Times' hatchet job you cited. That article is opinion mixed with fact and tries to dump the blame squarely on one person. Just like you in your comments, the author shows a strongly negative bias towards anything other than fossil fuel-derived energy.
It is just your OPINION that a wind turbine is an eye sore. In your comment, you negated to mention the effectiveness of solar energy. The reality is that the moment a photovoltaic panel has sunlight on it, electricity is created. What was cited in the article was a political battle between opposing viewpoints with some manageable engineering issues thrown in. Solar would be a successful energy source at the campuses (WITH NO FUEL COST) if the opposing parties would cut out the bickering.
The day of dinosaur fuel and dinosaur thinking is nearing it's end.

It is so hypocritical of the Obama regime to approve these eyesores which produce very little energy and disapprove oil drilling in areas which produce oil we desperately need. Obama continues to obstruct domestic production of oil on federal land/water and works to eliminate cheap energy produced by clean coal.
Wind farms are expensive eyesores. They have proven to be a waste of money. The government has spent billions of taxpayer dollars subsidizing their construction and use across the country. But high maintenance costs, high rates of failure, and fluctuating weather conditions that affect energy production render wind turbines expensive and inefficient, which is why more than 14,000 of them have since been abandoned.
Before government subsidies for the giant metals were cut or eliminated in many areas, wind farms were an energy boom business. But in the post-tax subsidy era, the costs of maintaining and operating wind turbines far outweighs the minimal power they generate in many areas, which has left a patchwork of wind turbine graveyards in many of the most popular wind farming areas of the US.
If you want to read a good story about alternative energy, you should read the Los Angeles Times article on Larry Eisenberg trying to take the LA Community College district off the power grid by spending between 1 to 1.9 BILLION dollars (depending on the cost estimate) on solar, wind and geothermal power for nine college campuses that only spent 8 MILLION dollars in 2010 for power.
The wind turbine they built on the college campus spins too slowly in average winds to power a single 60-watt light bulb.

Looks like Salazar will be part of this nation's 14% unemployment rate in about 14 weeks.

Salazar approves massive Wyoming wind farm project, let's hope the taxpayers dollars are Not wasted, like in the past, with some 'green' projects. I hope the wind farm continues producing electricity and not rusting like some of the wind farms in Hawaii (The maintenace cost were very high priced to keep them in operation and producing electricity). Renewable energy from Solar, Wind, Hydro, Thermal, Tidal and/or Nuclear. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

“Relationshp [sic] to gas prices?” “how is this development relevant to gasoline prices and/or issues?”
Come on guys, try reading the news guidelines before complaining. Anything relating to energy, especially alternative energy resources, is fair game for Newsville. And thank heavens; wouldn’t we all be bored to tears if every news article was about the price of gas?

Let’s get the Production Tax Credit repealed, then see if they still want to build this thing. “Wind” farms are better described as tax farms since the main thing they harvest is tax credits and subsidies from the government — our money.

I am sure someone will complain. I hope we do not have to pay them to not generate power as is done in some areas when they create it but we cannot use all that is supplied. There had to be a way to store the electricity for later use in the future and a smart grid and better transmission lines.

More waste. Let power companies do it without subsidy. If is not profitable, it is a loser. Salazar is a loser as is his boss: BHO & Co.
Picking losers again.
Let the greenies spend their own money, not taxpayers money.
Let the greenies spend their own money, not OPM - Other People's Money.
Let the greenies walk. Let them freeze. Let them go broke. Let them go first.
Green is red.

Why not 3 nuclear power plants putting out the same energy on 1/100th of the land? How much U.S. taxpayer money is this 'massive Wyoming wind farm project' going to cost?
